Brook Vs Deluca Card
Kell Brook hasn’t been in the ring since his decision victory over New Zealand’s Michael Zerafa in December 2018. That victory left him with a 38-2 fight record. And, after a long break, it’s time for British boxing fans to see one of our most talented fighters in the ring again.
On February 8th, 2020, Brook will face off against the USA’s Mark DeLuca in his hometown of Sheffield. The bookies have Brook as the heavy favourite to win. But, in this piece, I’ll be exploring some of the betting opportunities, and I’ll give my predictions of what I think could happen in the fight. Let’s get ready to rumble!
Brook DeLuca purse payouts hike as the pay-per-view schedule for (DAZN) tv coverage. DAZN hold the official rights for the Brook and DeLuca main card fight. Which means both fighters get paid 60% and 40% revenue share from international money as per sources claimed. PETA's action alerts allows you to easily contact companies, universities, government agencies, and others to improve the lives of animals used for food, clothing, experimentation and entertainment.
The Tale of the Tape
First, let’s compare the two fighters. This is the tale of the tape:
Kell Brook | Fighter Stats | Mark DeLuca |
---|---|---|
38 | Wins | 24 |
2 | Losses | 1 |
25 | KOs | 13 |
0 | Draws | 0 |
40 | Total Bouts | 25 |
63% | KO% | 52% |
5’9” | Height | 5’9” |
69” | Reach | 72” |
Orthodox | Stance | Orthodox |
Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK | Nationality | Quincy, MA, USA |
May 3rd, 1986 | DOB | December 2nd, 1988 |
From this, we can glean a few key takeaways:
- Brook is the far more experienced fighter. He has more wins by knockout than DeLuca has had fights, period.
- Both men are capable of knocking opponents out, Brook more so than DeLuca.
- DeLuca has the reach advantage. Both men are the same height. Brook is the slightly older fighter.
Of course, the tale of the tape can’t tell you everything. It’s just an initial look at some key stats. We’ve got to look deeper into the fight record of both men to find out more.
What Do Their Fight Records Tell Us?
In a long career full of hard battles, Brook has only lost twice. Those two defeats were to boxing legends Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr. They were back to back losses in September 2016 and May 2017, respectively. GGG won by TKO, while Errol Spence Jr. won by KO.
How about DeLuca? He’s only lost once, and that was to Walter Wright in June 2018. He did avenge that loss four months later, but the first fight remains his one and only loss so far.
Something immediately jumped out at me here. First, DeLuca has knocked out over half of his opponents, and second, Brook’s two losses have come fairly recently and have both been by knockout. While the bookies have Brook as the heavy favourite to win, 1/20 at Betway is the best price I could find. There’s a decent chance that DeLuca could knock Brook out.
Yes, it’s a longshot bet, and one I am prepared to potentially lose, but gambling is about risk-reward. And with most bookmakers giving DeLuca 8/1 odds to win, I’ll take a small risk of £10 on this outcome. There’s absolutely no point in risking £20 to gain £1 on a Kell Brook victory, so for me, this bet is an easy decision, but I won’t be risking too much on it.
So far, no boxing betting sites are offering any other action on this fight. For example, even Bet365, which is renowned for its in-depth markets, aren’t offering odds on the method of victory or anything else yet. Perhaps that will change as the fight draws closer, but for now, I’m going to make this wager.
Betting on the Undercard
There are always a few betting opportunities to be found on the undercard of main boxing fights, and on this one, there are two fights which top UK betting sites are offering action on. Let’s look at those now.
Kid Galahad vs. Claudio Marrero
Kid Galahad is coming off the back of his one and only defeat to Josh Warrington in June 2019. True boxing fans will know that Warrington is an exceptional fighter, so this being his only defeat in 27 bouts tells you that Kid Galahad is a tough fighter.
Claudio Marrero has lost three times in 27 bouts, twice by decision and once by knockout. Two of those defeats have come in his last five fights, so he’s not on exceptional form.
When you combine Galahad’s superior record with his desire to redeem himself after a humbling defeat to Warrington and compare that to a good fighter who is clearly not at his best right now, it’s all the evidence I need to go with the bookies on this one.
Kid Galahad should take this one by decision. The best odds I could find on this were 1/4. It’s more risk than reward, so I’ll sit this one out. If you’re going to bet on this fight, a small longshot bet on Marrero may be the wiser decision at 11/4 odds. You stand to almost triple your money if he does pull it off. It’s possible, but it doesn’t look likely.
Terri Harper vs. Eva Wahlstrom
There’s no doubt that modern-day boxing has produced some incredible female fighters. While some of the “lads” may not tune in for these fights, true fans of boxing know that women can fight as hard as, if not harder than, men.
The UK’s own Terri Harper is thus far undefeated and has won five or her nine bouts by KO. She’s scary, to put it mildly, and she’s quickly risen through the ranks to win two world titles — the WBC and IBO Female Super Feather titles. That’s impressive in just nine fights, don’t you think?
Finland’s Eva Wahlstrom is the more experienced fighter. With 26 pro fights, 23 of which she has won, two of which she has drawn, and only one of which she has lost, she’s not be taken lightly. When you factor in that her only defeat was to Katie Taylor, it puts things into perspective. This is a serious contender with a highly respectable fight record.
However, Harper is on Taylor’s level. I think she will likely win this by KO. That said, a wager on it will only return £1 for every £7 risked at Bet365, so I’m not going to bet on it. Instead, I’m going to place a £5 wager on the underdog at 4/1 odds.
Where to Bet on the Kell Brook Fight
If you’re interested in betting on any of these fights, there are two betting sites which I recommend. Both will give you enticing welcome offers to get you started.
- Bet365 – By far the biggest betting site in the UK, Bet365 will give you up to £100 in bet credits when you sign up and make a deposit. It has the biggest range of betting markets of any UK bookmaker and has fantastic live betting options as well as features like live streaming.
- Betway – Betway will give all new UK and Irish punters up to £30 in free bets. It’s one of the few betting sites which can compete with Bet365 in terms of the range of markets. It also has excellent live betting markets and great features like early cashout.
Fight Night: Conclusion
Unfortunately, there are no “easy” bets in boxing. There’s usually a heavy favourite which makes it too risky to wager on them, and that is why both of my bets on this card will be on the underdogs.
This is my boxing betting strategy. Yes, I often lose small amounts of money, but I keep meticulous records of my bets, and I can tell you that I’m up overall after several years of betting on boxing.
How so? The big wins on the underdogs come frequently enough to cancel out the small losses which happen more frequently, and overall, I’m in profit. Plus, I’ve had a lot of fun along the way.
When it comes to betting on boxing or any other kind of fighting, it’s the only type of bet I make. Since this is a sport where one lucky punch can put a highly-skilled champion’s lights out, it’s much more successful than you might think. Enjoy the fight, guys!
